Gottman Training Levels Explained
The Gottman Institute offers several levels of training, and they are not equivalent. When a therapist says they''re "Gottman-trained," it can mean very different things:
Level 1 Training: A 2-day workshop introducing the Gottman Method. Thousands of therapists have completed this. It''s a meaningful starting point but represents minimal expertise.
Level 2 Training: A more intensive multi-day training covering the Sound Relationship House model in depth. Requires completing Level 1 first. More substantive.
Level 3 Training: The most advanced training short of certification. Covers clinical application in detail.
Certified Gottman Therapist: This is the gold standard. Requires completing all three training levels, submitting recorded session tapes for review, passing a written exam, and completing supervised practice. Fewer than 10% of Gottman-trained therapists hold this designation.
When you see "Gottman-certified" in a profile, confirm whether it means Level 1 trained or actually certified. Both are worth working with — but they represent very different levels of expertise.
How to Find a Genuinely Qualified Gottman Therapist
Option 1: The Gottman Referral Network. The Gottman Institute maintains a referral network at their website. You can search by location and filter by training level. This is the most reliable source.
Option 2: Ask directly. When contacting a therapist, ask: "What level of Gottman training do you have? Are you a certified Gottman therapist?" A transparent answer tells you a lot.
Option 3: Look for it explicitly in the bio. Qualified Gottman therapists typically specify their level — "Gottman Level 2 trained" or "Certified Gottman Therapist." Vague phrases like "trained in Gottman Method" with no level specified usually indicate Level 1.

The downside is cost. Certified Gottman therapists typically charge more than generalist counselors. But for couples who want to do this properly, the research backing is hard to argue with.
Does Gottman Counseling Count for State Marriage License Discounts?
Yes. As long as your Gottman therapist is a licensed professional (LMFT, LPC, LCSW, psychologist), their premarital counseling qualifies for marriage license discounts in states like Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, Indiana, Tennessee, and Minnesota. Confirm with your specific therapist that they can issue the required certificate.
